Oropos

The Municipality of Oropos lays in North-East Attica, just 42 km from the centre of Athens and is, all year round, one of the most popular destinations for short and exciting getaways and wonderful holidays on the Euboean Gulf. It is easily accessible by car and directly connected via the Athens-Lamia highway by bus and the Athens-Thessaloniki railway network

The seafront area of the Municipality extends from Agioi Apostoloi and Agona beach of Kalamos , to Paralia Markopoulou, the Lighthouse being a must see sightseeing point, driving past the port of Skala Oropou – ferry connection to Eretria, Evia, to reach up to Agios Konstantinos, the picturesque community of Chalkoutsi and sandy Pigadakia beach.

The beach bars on the seaside are ideal not only for a morning coffee, but also for a cold beer or cocktails, relaxing on the sunbeds, gazing the scenery of the island of Evia and the breath-taking sunset. If you are the sporty type, water sports facilities are also provided, while the beach is bustling with life, the meeting point for the young and restless, pumping up the beat of the summer days and nights.

Looking for street food, gourmet fish delicacies, pizza, or local cuisine, the fish tavernas, pizzerias and grill houses, offer the best in their menus and service with a smile, topped by the pastry shops’ temptations of pastries, delicious crepes and ice cream combos, along the 22 km of the coastal area of Oropos, a real feast for visitors to choose.

The villages of the Municipality in the mountainous area furthermore, extend the experience of unparallel natural beauty combined with outdoors activities, with less or more thrill for the daring, who are looking for alternative ways of entertainment.

Must visit the community of Afidnes situated in the eastern foothills of the Parnitha mountain, were we meet the enchanting Lake Beletsi, driving towards Polydendri and Kapandriti were the wine afficionados will taste the best of Greek wines of Lazaridis vineyards and tour the Lazaridis Wine Museum.

On the way to the community of Malakasa, there are an organized adventure park with exciting activities and the well-known concert venue Terra Vibe, which has hosted legendary names of the world music scene.

The picturesque Milesi with its panoramic view of the Euboean Gulf, is the gem on the crown of many monasteries of the Municipality, visited by believers from abroad and Greeks, the most impressive being the monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ, blessed by the holy man Agios Porphyrios. Another vibrant community is that of Avlona, there we find the unique Zygomalas Museum of Embroideries, while there is an Equestrian Club and a recreational farm specially designed for children.


The technological museum Faethon is another attraction driving from Athens, in the 32nd km. of the National Road Athens-Lamia to Markopoulo Oropou.

Two early Byzantine period churches are under preservation in Sykamino, while in the same village the Knights Hospitallers of Rhodes built a Frankish castle in the 12th century.

In Skala Oropou, near the port, a complex of old buildings, where detention centre (prison) of the resistance, most famous Mikis Theodorakis, thus preserved as a Historical place mark, where nowadays the Municipal Conservatory is housed and concerts have been held in the courtyard during the summer months.


Finally, the Archaeological site of Amphiareion, in Kalamos, is a worldwide known Cultural Heritage place mark, which defines the origins of the Municipality of Oropos, since the dawn of human history.

The Municipality of Oropos provides also health care services, including testing and vaccinations for COVID-19 .
